Six Former Surrey Scorchers Players Ensnared in Match-Fixing Scandal

The British Gambling Commission (BGC), working alongside the British Basketball Federation (BBF) and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), has announced serious penalties against the individuals involved.
This controversy stems from a collaborative investigation conducted by the BGC’s Sport Betting Intelligence Unit (SBIU), the BBF, and FIBA, targeting practices within the British Basketball League (BBL), which concluded its 38-year run at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Among those implicated are Quincy Taylor, Charleston Dobbs, Shakem Johnston, Padiet Wang, and Joshua McFolley—players previously representing the Surrey Scorchers. Notably, these individuals were found to have manipulated the outcomes in multiple games throughout the 2022-23 season, accepting payments to influence match results or participating in planned fixes.
The BBF responded decisively, imposing lifetime bans and fines amounting to £3,000 (approximately $4,080) on both Taylor and Dobbs. Johnston and Wang faced global bans from FIBA, whereas McFolley’s suspension is slated to last until September 2034.

Another player caught in this web of deceit is Dean Wanliss, formerly a Scorchers player, who was identified for placing bets on basketball games from 2019 to 2021, contravening established regulations. Following an investigation by FIBA, the Spanish Basketball Federation, the International Olympic Committee Monitoring Unit, and the British betting sector, Wanliss received a fine of £3,000 and a three-year ban from the sport.
