August Sees Robust Gambling Revenue Growth in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania’s commercial gambling industry achieved significant milestones last month, generating an impressive $582.3 million in revenue—marking August as the second-highest month ever recorded in the state’s gambling history.
This revenue figure represents a remarkable 14.2% increase compared to August 2022 and exceeds July’s income by 4.4%. It narrowly trails the all-time high of $601.8 million set in May 2025.
According to the latest statistics from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, traditional slot machines continue to dominate the revenue landscape, yet sports betting has emerged as the fastest-growing segment, surpassing the gains in iGaming.
iGaming Revenue Surges to New Heights
Delving into the specifics, iGaming—which encompasses online slots, table games, and poker—reported total revenues of $231.2 million, a staggering year-over-year boost of 25.9%. Online slots remained the frontrunners, bringing in $179.3 million, marking a 29.6% rise. Internet table games and poker also showed promising growth, with revenues of $49.4 million and $2.5 million respectively, reflecting increases of 14.4% and 12.6%.
Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course continues to lead the iGaming market with combined revenues soaring to $85.5 million, an 18.5% increase. Valley Forge Casino Resort and Rivers Casino Philadelphia follow, generating $67.6 million and $36.6 million, representing growth rates of 47.1% and 18.5%, respectively.
Sports Betting Revenue Skyrockets
In the realm of sports betting, taxable revenue soared to $49.2 million, marking an impressive 63.8% surge from the previous year. This revenue primarily stemmed from online betting, which accounted for $45.4 million, while retail sportsbooks contributed $3.7 million.
The overall betting handle in Pennsylvania also rose to $515.4 million, a 6.2% increase. The online betting segment led with $490 million, while retail venues took in $25.4 million. Pennsylvania’s statewide hold for August was reported at 9.55%.
Market leaders in sports betting include FanDuel, which partnered with Valley Forge Casino Resort, bringing in $18.8 million from a $171.7 million handle for a hold of 10.95%. DraftKings, alongside Hollywood Casino at the Meadows, came in second with $12.3 million in revenue from a $144.2 million handle. The competition remains fierce, with Fanatics and Hollywood Casino York securing third place.
Growth in Land-based Gambling
On the land-based front, retail slots enjoyed a moderate increase of 2.6%, totaling $216.6 million, while retail table games slightly edged upward to $81.1 million. However, video gaming terminal revenues at truck stops experienced a 2.4% decline, falling to $4.6 million. Conversely, revenue from fantasy sports showed resilience, climbing 2.6% to reach $664,758.
The state and local governments benefited as well, with total tax revenue for August amounting to $238.5 million. This included $103.9 million from iGaming, $14.6 million from sports betting, $105.3 million from retail slots, and $12.9 million from land-based table games.
