Ontario Online Gambling Revenue Sees Significant Year-on-Year Growth
In June, Ontario’s online gambling sector experienced a remarkable 41% increase in revenue compared to the same month last year.
The province’s online gaming revenue reached CA$307 million (approximately US$226 million) in June, highlighting substantial growth over the previous year but reflecting a decline from the peak established in May.
The gross gaming revenue, while impressive at 27.9% higher than last June’s figure of CA$240 million, fell short of May’s record-setting total of CA$338 million, marking a decrease of 9.2%.
According to insights from iGaming Ontario, online casinos were responsible for the lion’s share of this revenue, contributing CA$243 million—41% greater than the figure reported a year ago.
In contrast, revenue from online sports betting saw a decrease, dropping by 7.9% to CA$58 million. Meanwhile, internet poker revenue experienced a boost, rising 12.5% to reach CA$5.4 million during the month.
Increased Player Spending in Ontario
Player spending also showed notable growth, with total wagers amounting to CA$7.26 billion. This figure not only surpassed last year’s expenditure by 21.4% but also fell short of the CA$8.07 billion wagered in May by 10%.
Wagering on online casinos surged by 25.2% to CA$6.36 billion, while spending in online sports betting remained stable at CA$768 million. Online poker betting similarly maintained a steady level at CA$132 million.
Regarding user engagement, iGaming Ontario reported that there were one million active online gambling accounts in June, reflecting an increase of 20.9% year-on-year, although this was a slight decline of 5.2% from May.
The average revenue generated per active player also rose by 5.9% to CA$303 million, though it was still down 4.1% from the May average of CA$316 million.
Conclusion
The evolving landscape of online gambling in Ontario illustrates both impressive growth and variability in player spending and gaming interests, underscoring a dynamic market poised for continued changes and opportunities.
