North Carolina’s Sports Betting Revenue Surges to $54.1 Million in August
North Carolina has bounced back from a challenging period in July, marking a significant improvement in sports betting activity with robust year-on-year growth in both revenue and wager volume for August.
According to the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, gross wagering revenue soared to $54.1 million, reflecting a remarkable increase of 60.1% compared to the same month last year. This figure also represents a dramatic recovery, climbing 138.3% from the record low observed in July.
August witnessed a paid wagering handle that exceeded $463.8 million. When factoring in promotional wagers valued at $14.8 million, the total handle reached an impressive $478.7 million, showcasing a 29.2% rise compared to the previous year and matching that same percentage gain from July 2025.
Strong Performance Metrics
This upswing resulted in a statewide hold of 12.86%, significantly surpassing both August 2024’s hold of 9.1% and July’s figure of 6.13%. Notably, there were $4 million in voided bets, while players collectively received $420.6 million back from their stakes. The tax revenue from betting activities in August generated $9.7 million for the state.
While detailed performance metrics for individual operators in North Carolina aren’t publicly disclosed, several major players, including FanDuel, DraftKings, Fanatics, ESPN Bet, Bet365, and BetMGM, are actively participating in the market.
North Carolina officially launched its regulated online sports betting platform in March 2024, paving the way for this impressive rise in wagering activities. As the state continues to refine its sports betting landscape, stakeholders remain optimistic about sustained growth in the coming months.
