North Carolina’s Sports Betting Landscape: A Curious Upswing Amid Declining Figures
In April, North Carolina experienced an interesting situation in its sports betting sector, showcasing month-to-month revenue growth even as overall spending dipped.
During the month, bettors in the state placed wagers totaling $576.2 million. The paid wagering revenue reached $560.7 million, coupled with $15.5 million from promotional bets. However, this figure was a notable 11.2% decrease compared to April 2024, which marked the first complete month of legalized sports betting in North Carolina. Additionally, it fell short by 15.8% from March 2025’s impressive $685 million.
A 55.6% Decline in Revenue
Interestingly, the state’s betting revenue registered a staggering 55.6% decline year-on-year. The North Carolina State Lottery Commission reported that there were $4.1 million in canceled and voided bets, while bettors took home $525.3 million in winnings.
This trend resulted in gross wagering revenue exceeding $46.8 million, which is down 55.6% from the same time last year. Despite the overall drop in spending, it’s worth noting that this figure saw a 22.8% increase in comparison to March’s earnings. This shift led to a statewide hold of 8.12% in April, a noticeable improvement from March’s 5.78%.
While the specifics on individual operators remain undisclosed, prominent names like FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and Fanatics continue to make their mark in the North Carolina market.
In summary, while North Carolina’s sports betting revenue faced considerable year-on-year challenges, the month-to-month increase shines a light on the complexity of consumer behavior within the evolving landscape of sports wagering.
