Michigan Breaks Online Gambling Revenue Records in May
In a remarkable surge, Michigan’s online gambling sector achieved an unprecedented revenue milestone of $301.4 million in May, showcasing robust growth in both iGaming and mobile sports betting markets. This figure marks a significant leap from the previous high of $260.5 million established just two months prior.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board reported that this month’s total represented a 15.8% increase over March’s figures and was 26% higher than revenue from May 2024. Compared to April, the revenue saw a 21.6% uptick.
Highlighting iGaming Success
A significant contributor to the overall revenue was the iGaming segment, where online slots and table games generated $251.5 million, reflecting a 26.6% year-over-year growth. After adjusting for promotional expenses, the iGaming sector reported $236.2 million, a 31.9% improvement compared to the same month last year.
In May, BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit reclaimed their position at the forefront of the market, earning $7.4 million in gross receipts and $63.3 million in adjusted figures. Close behind them were FanDuel and MotorCity Casino, which hit $65.9 million in gross receipts.
Sports Betting Gains Traction
Shifting focus to sports betting, Michigan witnessed a 19.3% rise in gross revenues compared to last year, totaling $50 million. Adjusted receipts climbed 27.7% to $35.6 million, buoyed by a year-on-year handle increase of 12.3%, reaching $386.1 million. The statewide hold for May settled at 12.95%.
FanDuel and MotorCity Casino maintained a strong grip on the sports betting landscape, generating gross receipts exceeding $22.6 million. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community held their ground in second place, while BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit rounded out the top three.
The Detroit Casino Scene
Additionally, the revenue from Detroit’s three commercial casinos—MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown—amounted to $114 million, indicating a modest year-on-year growth of 0.4%. Most of this revenue stemmed from table games and slots.
