Michigan Achieves Record Online Gambling Revenue in August

Record-Breaking Online Gambling Revenue in Michigan

In August, Michigan marked an impressive milestone as its online gambling sector generated a staggering $312.5 million in gross revenue. This figure represents a notable year-on-year increase across both iGaming and internet sports betting components.

This month’s revenue reflects a remarkable 39.5% growth compared to the same month in 2024, as highlighted by the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). Additionally, it surpassed July’s earnings by 9.8% and eclipsed the previous monthly high from May 2025 by 3.6%.

Gross revenue for iGaming alone reached $263.3 million, showcasing a robust increase of 33.9%. Internet sports betting similarly surged, with a staggering 79.9% year-on-year rise, totaling $49.3 million. These figures encompass both commercial and tribal operations across the state.

Total adjusted gross receipts (AGR), which factor in promotional expenditures, saw an extraordinary increase of 45.7%, totalling $281.4 million. Within this, iGaming accounted for $247.2 million—up 39.8%—while sports betting jumped an impressive 109.8% to reach $34.2 million.

For sports betting specifically, the handle reached $338.9 million, representing a 21% increase from August 2024. This resulted in a hold of 14.55% based on gross revenue and 10.09% when considering the AGR.

FanDuel and MotorCity Dominate the iGaming Sphere

In terms of individual operators, FanDuel and MotorCity have ascended to the top of Michigan’s iGaming landscape. This partnership yielded gross revenue of $71.1 million, with an AGR of $66.9 million.

MGM and BetMGM, previously leaders, slipped to second place, with $66.6 million in gross revenue and $62.6 million in AGR. DraftKings and the Bay Mills Indian Community secured third, generating $41.1 million and $38.6 million, respectively.

When it comes to sports betting, FanDuel and MotorCity also led the charge, achieving $17.8 million in gross receipts and $13.5 million in AGR. They maintained a handle of $107.7 million, resulting in a hold of 16.5%.

DraftKings followed in the second position, garnering $15.7 million with an AGR of $9.9 million, based on a handle of $103.1 million and a hold of 15.25%. BetMGM trailed behind with $6.8 million in gross receipts and $4.5 million in AGR from a $50.7 million handle, yielding a hold of 13.41%.

From a tax perspective, the state benefitted significantly with monthly revenues totaling $53.7 million, of which $51.6 million stemmed from iGaming and $2.1 million from sports betting. The City of Detroit saw tax revenues amounting to $13.8 million, with the majority—$13.2 million—coming from iGaming.

Decline in August Casino Revenue

In contrast, the commercial casinos in Detroit reported lower revenues for August, totaling $106.9 million—a 5% decline compared to the previous year. Table games and slot machines comprised $105.7 million of this sum, marking a 4.6% decrease, while sports betting accounted for the remaining $1.2 million, reflecting a year-on-year drop of 26.7%.

MGM Grand Detroit led the market with a 48% share, followed by MotorCity Casino at 30% and Greektown’s Hollywood Casino with 22%.

In summary, while online gambling continues to break records in Michigan, the casino segment faces challenges that could reshape the future of gaming in the state.
