Dutch Regulator Strengthens Actions to Combat Illegal Gambling Apps

The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the gambling authority of the Netherlands, has heightened its vigilance against illegal gambling applications, successfully advocating for the removal of 20 such apps from digital marketplaces this year alone.

In a recent announcement made on April 7, KSA underscored the importance of citizen involvement in this initiative, urging consumers to report any questionable apps they encounter. This call to action aims to bolster the KSA’s mission of eradicating illegal gambling practices that threaten Dutch players.

The issue of unregulated gambling apps has escalated into a significant concern for the KSA. The authority noted that the rise in these unauthorized applications not only poses risks to adult users but is particularly alarming due to their accessibility to minors. Many of these illicit platforms are promoted through social media channels, which raises further red flags regarding their targeting of vulnerable demographics.

The KSA has taken measures to inform the public about the deceptive strategies employed by illegal operators. Some malicious apps disguise themselves as legitimate by using the branding of authorized providers, such as Holland Casino, to mislead users into thinking they are safe. For instance, a report highlighted an unnamed app on Apple’s App Store that had inappropriately utilized the Holland Casino logo.

Moreover, certain operators have been found to lure users with seemingly benign games like plinko, only to redirect them to illegal gambling sites once the app is installed. The KSA emphasizes that consumer vigilance is critical in this battle; they request that when individuals report suspicious gambling advertisements, they include the specific names of the apps involved.

In their efforts to combat this issue, the KSA is collaborating closely with industry stakeholders, including licensed casinos and associations. This partnership has facilitated more effective reporting and investigation of illegal gambling sites and applications. One notable initiative, Meld Vals Spel, has been launched by the industry to provide a straightforward platform for reporting illicit gambling activities. Tips forwarded through this service are also taken up for thorough examination by the KSA.

The KSA has established formal agreements with app stores to streamline the reporting process. By working together, they aim to ensure that illegal apps are swiftly identified and removed, thereby enhancing the security of the online gambling landscape in the Netherlands.
