Ontario’s Online Gambling Revenue Soars: A New Era for iGaming

In a remarkable turn of events, Ontario’s online gambling sector has witnessed a staggering 32% year-on-year growth in gross gaming revenue, reaching an impressive CA$3.20 billion (£1.73 billion/€2.03 billion/US$2.30 billion) for the fiscal year 2024-25. This marks the highest annual revenue since the province legalized online gaming, reflecting the burgeoning appeal of this virtual entertainment avenue.

Recent reports from iGaming Ontario shed light on the performance of the regulated online gambling market, operating from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025. Ontario’s venture into legal online gaming began in April 2022, and the data reveals explosive growth compared to previous years. The revenue generated this year eclipses the CA$2.4 billion recorded in the second year of operation and showcases a remarkable 129% increase over the initial year’s CA$1.40 billion.

A closer look into the figures reveals that CA$2.40 billion of this revenue stemmed from casino gambling, showing a 36% rise from last year. Meanwhile, the betting segment saw revenue jump by 23% to CA$724.0 million, while online poker remained constant at CA$66.0 million during this period.

Total online wagers also surged, amounting to CA$82.7 billion—a 31% growth from the prior year. iGaming Ontario clarified that this figure does not include promotional wagers. The casino sector attracted the lion’s share of these bets, with CA$69.6 billion wagered, a 34% increase, while betting wagers rose 17% to CA$11.4 billion. Poker also saw a modest uptick, with spending reaching CA$1.7 billion, up 2%.

A Milestone Quarter for Ontario’s Gaming Landscape

The final quarter of this fiscal year set records, culminating in a peak revenue figure of CA$903 million for the three months ending March 31. Wagering during this period soared to an unprecedented CA$22.9 billion, underscoring the burgeoning enthusiasm for online gaming among Ontarians.

Players can now choose from 84 different gaming sites operated by 49 licensed providers, showcasing a rich array of games and options. “These numbers reflect Ontario’s vibrant iGaming market, featuring a robust line-up of operators and an exceptional selection of games for players,” stated Heidi Reinhart, chair of iGaming Ontario. “Our regulated market continues to flourish by providing a safer gaming environment for the people of Ontario.”

March Revenue Surpasses CA$294.8 Million

In a shift towards greater transparency, Ontario has transitioned to monthly reporting of online gambling metrics. Reports from iGaming Ontario reveal that March alone generated CA$294.8 million in total revenue, marking a 22.3% increase year-on-year and a 5.3% rise from February. The casino sector was the leading contributor, generating CA$240.3 million, while betting and poker brought in CA$47.9 million and CA$6.6 million, respectively.

Total wagers in March reached CA$7.94 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of 27.2%. Of this total, CA$6.6 billion was allocated to casino gaming, CA$1.12 billion to betting, and CA$148 million to poker. Notably, 1.1 million player accounts were active in March, with an average revenue of CA$278 per active account.
